Entry Into The Testing and Balancing Industry

The metal fabrication industry is involved in many aspects of construction and manufacturing and sheet metal fabrication is seen as the entry level to the greater metal fabrication trade due to the relative cheapness of tools and materials.

Unlike the solid metal machining trade, sheet metal manufacturers use a variety of hand tools in addition to heavy machinery to fabricate, maintain and install thin metal products and components. The sheet metal worker will take on four main roles, each requiring a different skill-set:

Fabrication: These workers create products and components in workshops for use in greater construction projects. Fabrication work requires the use of precision hand tools and is often aided by the use of computers, in a process known as Computer Aided Design, otherwise known as C.A.D.

Installation: Installation workers are responsible for fitting sheet metal parts involved in the process of construction, such as roofing or ventilation duct systems. Precision is required for this job, but not as much as in fabrication.

Maintenance: Maintenance workers clean and repair already existing sheet metal systems to increase their efficiency.

Testing and Balancing: This a specialist job that entails testing and optimizing already installed sheet metal heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to increase efficiency. This differs from maintenance as it is required on an ongoing basis and does not involve repair or cleaning.
